Four fifth-year students from Cardiff University spent a month from 20 February to 17 March at Mie Hospital and Mie University Hospital for 1-2 weeks each for training in dermatology, orthopedic surgery, rheumatology, hematology, oncology and cancer center, radiology, breast surgery, emergency medicine, pediatrics and plastic surgery. The training was conducted for one or two weeks each in the following departments.
Each student said that they were very kindly guided by the doctors in each of the departments that accepted them. The students also interacted in various ways with the Mie University School of Medicine students who were rotating in their respective departments and who were planning to train at Cardiff University.
We are happy to have successfully resumed exchanges that had stopped for two years due to COVID19. We hope that international exchange between Mie University School of Medicine students and medical students from other countries, including Cardiff University, will develop further and that they will become active as international medical professionals.

The past four weeks of practical training at Mie University hospital has been an eye-opening experience.
I got the opportunity to rotate between the departments of dermatology, oncology and radiology.
During my time here I have met many members of staff who were experienced experts in their field who taught me very valuable knowledge such as new cancer treatments that were being used for the first time in the hospital, as well as witnessing specialist interventional radiological procedures.
Both students and staff were extremely kind and accommodating and went out of their way to provide their support, despite English not being their first language.
It was also very interesting to learn about the differences in the education and health systems between Japan and the UK.
This has been a really enjoyable experience- I would like to thank everyone involved in organising this exchange programme and I am looking forward to welcoming the local students in Cardiff later this year.

My 4 week placement at Mie University Hospital has enhanced my clinical knowledge within the departments I have shadowed and given me a deeper understanding of the Japanese healthcare system. The training was well organised and all the staff and students have been very friendly, welcoming and accommodating. I am grateful for this experience and will cherish my time here. Furthermore, I will carry forward the lessons learnt in my future practice as a doctor.

Tha Paediatric Rotation: The team was very kind and welcoming! They were very keen to get me involved by translating to me, hosting conferences in English and taking me on ward rounds to meet the patients and examine them. I felt well-supported by the doctors and the students who were very interested in my learning, and who encouraged me to take advantage of as many opportunities as possible. Dr Sugo, Dr Sugata and Dr Nagao have gone the extra mile to make me feel part of the team, explaining the way the departments worked and including me in teachings. I am very grateful for Hori-sensei for allowing me to have a two-week placement there and for the variety of specialities I engaged with from paediatric allergy, acute and chronic paediatric patients, paediatric disability and paediatric neurology. I wanted to extend a special thank you to the students who looked after me, showed me around the hospital and drove me there every day. They were truly welcoming and extremely helpful in helping me get accustomed to the new medical system.
The Haematology Rotation: Although short, I am highly appreciative for the extent in which the haematology department welcomed me into their profession. The kindness of the various consultants truly exceeded my expectations. I spent the week learning from haematologists with different specialists intertest and research focus which broadened my horizons and helped me learn so much! The doctors were very receptive to my questions and curiosity and have taken it upon themselves to give me as much educational opportunities as possible. I felt respected as a colleague and included in their discussions. I have seen nothing but kindness from the doctors, nurses, patients and students. I truly enjoyed my time there and found it very valuable for my future career.
The Emergency Medicine Rotation: I want to extend my gratitude to the emergency medicine department and all the members of the team for their hospitality and thoughtfulness. I truly appreciate this unique opportunity to experience acute care in this hospital. Dr Imai has been extremely supportive and keen to have me included. The students did a phenomenal job at translating for me, helping me understand, and making me feel like a friend. The doctors were always happy to explain things to me or get me involved. My expertise was respected, and I was listened to. I am very grateful for the generosity and consideration from the team. I have thoroughly enjoyed my rotation there and I wish everyone the best in their careers.
Overall, I had a lovely experience in Mie and am very grateful for being given the opportunity to learn there. I extend a warm thank you to the plastic surgery team, Shinano-san, and the four medical students coming to Cardiff this May. They have all made this experience better and I am grateful for all of them.
Thank you for everything!
Kind Regards,
Aayat

I had a very positive experience throughout my time at Mie University hospital. All of the doctors and medical students I met were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to be helpful and aid in translation for me. During both orthopaedic and breast surgery I was given the opportunity to get involved in the operation which was an amazing experience for me. I would like to extend a special thank you to Professor Sudo and the orthopaedic department for being so friendly and encouraging and aiding me in my future career prospects.
Many thanks for all of your help and kindness throughout my time at Mie University, I had the most amazing experience which I am sure will aid in the shaping of my future career as a surgeon.
